Start Quail Farming for Productive Cultivation

Quail is probably the smallest bird species used for egg and table meat production. Due to its productive egg and meat production, quail farming is a very profitable business economically.

Quail belong, along with chickens, pheasants and partridges to the Family Phasianidae of the Order Galliformes of the Class Aves of the Animal Kingdom. Species or subspecies of the genus Coturnix are native to all continents except America.

One of them, Coturnix coturnix or quail commonly called Icipingila in one of the regional languages ​​of Zambia (Bemba), is a migratory bird of Asia, Africa and Europe. Several interbreeding subspecies are recognized.

More important are the European quail, Coturnix coturnix, and the Asian or Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica. They were first domesticated in Japan in 1595. Later, in other countries of the world including the United States, Canada, Kenya, Zimbabwe, India, and Zambia.


How to Start Quail Farming

Quail farming means, commercially raising quail (like other poultry birds) for the purpose of profitable egg and meat production. Almost all types of weather conditions are suitable for starting a quail farming business. Quail meat and eggs are very tasty and nutritious.

Quail eggs are very nutritious compared to other poultry eggs, because quail eggs contain relatively more protein, phosphorus, iron, vitamins A, B1 and B2.

Quail farming can play an important role in meeting food and nutritional needs. And quail can be kept together with other birds for meat or eggs production.

Advantages of Quail Cultivation

There are many benefits of modern quail farming, for example:

  • Low space requirements (5–6 adult quail can be kept in one square foot).
  • Very low start-up costs, anyone can start a business with small capital.
  • Strong and adaptable.
  • Early maturation (egg production begins at 6-7 weeks of age).
  • High egg laying rate (280 eggs in a year/bird).
  • Short generation interval (3–4 generations in a year).
  • Fast growth (170-190 gram body weight at 5 weeks).
  • Low feed consumption (550–600 grams of feed/bird until 5th week).
  • Low production cost.
  • Resistant to common chicken diseases.
  • Quail meat is tastier than chicken and has low fat content. And it promotes body and brain development in young children.
  • In terms of nutritional criteria, quail eggs are much better than chicken eggs. It has a low cholesterol percentage. Quail meat and eggs are good for pregnant women and baby food.

Quail Farm Management

To be able to carry out efficient breeding and gradually improve productivity, it is necessary to keep accurate records.

Record the following events and their dates in a notebook:

  • Births
  • Death or loss (disease, theft, predators, etc.)
  • Planned removals (family consumption, sale, gift, ceremonies, etc.)
  • Eggs laid
  • Eggs consumed, sold, given away
  • Quail purchased or received as a gift

In a second notebook, record all treatments administered with the date and the exact dose (vaccines, wormers, external antiparasites, disinfectant used for the cages, etc.).

In a third notebook, record all expenditure and income, including the date of sale or purchase.

If you are incubating your own eggs, it is necessary to keep a fourth notebook in the form of a journal, noting each parameter selected or changed (temperature, humidity, number of times the eggs have been turned, etc.), as well as the date and number of chicks hatched, in order to gradually improve your hatch and fertility rate.
